Ben Kohles won the 2026 BMW Charity Pro-Am, held June 4-7 at Thornblade Club in Greer and Country Club of Spartanburg.

The event, which features both a celebrity tournament and a Korn Ferry Tour event, is held annually and benefits Upstate nonprofits. Since 2001, the event has contributed more than $17 million to local charities.

Kohles shot an even-par final round to finish 15-under, good for a four-stroke victory over Logan McAllister. It was his fifth Korn Ferry Tour win and his first this year. The Korn Ferry Tour is the developmental circuit for the PGA Tour.

Greenville native William Jennings, playing on a sponsor’s exemption, finished 12th and earned a spot in the next Korn Ferry Tour event – the OccuNet Classic June 11-14 in Amarillo, Texas. Jennings, who plays for Alabama, also finished second in the NCAA Division I Men’s National Championship on June 1.

The BMW Charity Pro-Am is presented by TD Synnex. This year’s celebrity lineup included movie star Bill Murray, U.S. and Furman soccer legend Clint Dempsey, and many more. The event will again be a stop on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2027.

The exhibition, which features works by artists Allison James of Central, Georgia; Bethany Mabee of Peoria, Illinois; and Morgan Walker of Florence, South Carolina; will be on display virtually on the gallery’s website and in person at 16 Aiken St. in Greenville through June 27.

“Committing to Memory” by Allison James. Photo provided by Art & Gallery

In “Natural Form,” the artists use abstraction to explore organic shapes and patterns found in nature. James finds inspiration for her abstract paintings in the messy, thrilling terrain of human experience and motherhood. Mabee is an abstract painter and textile designer who has spent over 20 years immersed in the interior design industry while simultaneously cultivating her painting and studio practice. Walker’s work reflects a personal relationship with control, rooted in her observations of life’s unpredictable nature. She drew inspiration from witnessing her late father’s frustrations with the loss of control over his penmanship due to Parkinson’s disease and her own struggles with mental health, as well as the broader realization that we truly control very little, said a news release from the gallery.

Duke Energy Foundation announced the second round of grants in honor of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary on May 20.

Two grants totaling $30,000 were awarded to South Carolina nonprofit organizations serving veterans: Upstate Warrior Solution in Greenville and Hidden Words in Sumter.

“As we prepare to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary, I can’t help but think of our nation’s veterans who made this celebration possible,” said Tim Pearson, president of Duke Energy South Carolina. “It’s important for us to invest in those who served and their families by getting them the training and skills they need to succeed after their military service.”

Upstate Warrior Solution received a $15,000 grant from Duke Energy Foundation to expand its workforce development services for veterans in Greenville, Spartanburg, Oconee and Anderson counties. Theresa Thompson, CEO of Upstate Warrior Solution, said they are honored to be selected as a grant recipient for the foundation’s America250 initiative.

“As our nation prepares to commemorate 250 years of history, this support allows us to create meaningful opportunities for veterans, first responders and our community to reflect on the service, sacrifice, and shared values that continue to shape our country,” Thompson said. “We are grateful for Duke Energy Foundation’s investment in preserving stories, fostering connection and celebrating the spirit of America in the Upstate.”

Duke Energy Foundation also awarded $15,000 to Hidden Words. The nonprofit organization will use the funding to launch Operation Hidden Wounds Employment, a comprehensive support system for job readiness and employment for veterans in Sumter, Lee, Clarendon and Kershaw counties.

The first round of grants for Duke Energy Foundation’s America250 initiative was awarded in April to organizations focused on parks and green space revitalization, tree planting, trail maintenance and litter prevention. In total, the foundation distributed more than $550,000 as part of its America250 initiative.

Greenville Women Giving announced May 19 it has awarded $525,799 in grant funding to seven Greenville County nonprofits.

“As population soars in Greenville County, so do the needs of our community and non-profits,” said Greenville Women Giving Co-Chair Jane Pannier. “Thanks to our membership and their commitment to contribute to the quality of life for all, we are again able to consistently fund organizations addressing critical needs. The caliber of applications this year was truly extraordinary, yet it underscores the staggering amount of unmet need within our community. Greenville Women Giving remains dedicated to bridging the gap between our vital non-profits and the resources they need to thrive.”

The 2026 grantees, which were selected out of 90 grant applications, include:

  • ReCraft Creative Reuse Center – $52,040 for Launching Greenville’s (Second!) Creative Reuse Center, which will collect donations from Upstate manufacturers, retailers, institutions and households and redistribute the materials to schools, festivals, makers, crafters, artists and students.
  • Augustine Literacy Project of the Upstate – $97,759 to hire a program coordinator who, in turn, will train more tutors, serve more struggling young readers and meet the rising demand across Greenville County.
  • Blue Ridge Council, Scouting America – $100,000 for Camp Old Indian Lake Cleanup, which will remove six feet of sediment from that Hurricane Helene dumped in the lake. The funding will also pay for a permanent, sustainable berm addition to prevent future sediment from entering the lake.
  • Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired SC – $25,000 for vision rehabilitation training for Greenville adults, which includes adaptive and practical skills for daily living, such as meal preparation, medication management, assistive technology use and safe travel.
  • Feed & Seed Co. – $70,000 for capital investments to SCALE for Sustainability, which will help Greenville County Schools students to receive increased access to healthy South Carolina grown food, while also providing local small and medium sized farmers with a reliable market.
  • Unity Health on Main – $100,000 for its Healing the Heart of District 25 program, which will allow the nonprofit to expand clinic hours to three days per week so more families can receive essential services, such as physical and mental health screenings led by a family nurse practitioner, bilingual mental health counseling and support from a community health worker.
  • Julie Valentine Center – $81,000 to be used for forensic interviews for children. The grant will be used to support the nonprofit’s services as the sole provider of trauma-informed forensic interviews in Greenville County.

Grants are funded by the contributions of Greenville Women Giving members.

Furman University President Elizabeth Davis will end her 12-year tenure as the university’s first female president at the end of the 2026-2027 academic year.

In a message to the campus community released May 18, Davis described taking on the university’s top leadership role in 2014 as the opportunity of a lifetime. She also characterized the timing of her decision as appropriate as the university celebrates its 200th anniversary and looks to the future.

“As we celebrate our 200th year and look toward our third century, it’s the right time to begin a leadership transition. Furman has never been stronger,” Davis said in the statement.”The world needs Furman University, and I’m convinced our third century will be the best yet.”

Under her leadership, Furman has risen in the U.S. News & World Report national liberal arts college rankings and has been named a “Most Innovative School” for eight consecutive years.

A number of initiatives were begun under Davis’ leadership, including:

  • The Furman Advantage. Launched in 2016, it guarantees every student a personalized, four-year pathway pairing classroom learning with research, internships, study away and community-engaged experiences, backed by sustained mentorship from faculty and staff. The Furman Advantage has received more than $78.9 million in support from The Duke Endowment.
  • Clearly Furman. The fundraising campaign launched in 2023 with a goal of $426 million. The initiative has surpassed that and is on track to conclude in June 2026 having raised more than $500 million.
  • Seeking Abraham. Furman’s reckoning with its historical ties to slavery, which has been recognized nationally.

Furman’s Board of Trustees is expected to establish a presidential search committee made up of trustees and representatives from faculty, staff, students and alumni to seek a replacement for Davis.
