Duke Energy Foundation announced the second round of grants in honor of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary on May 20.
Two grants totaling $30,000 were awarded to South Carolina nonprofit organizations serving veterans: Upstate Warrior Solution in Greenville and Hidden Words in Sumter.
“As we prepare to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary, I can’t help but think of our nation’s veterans who made this celebration possible,” said Tim Pearson, president of Duke Energy South Carolina. “It’s important for us to invest in those who served and their families by getting them the training and skills they need to succeed after their military service.”
Upstate Warrior Solution received a $15,000 grant from Duke Energy Foundation to expand its workforce development services for veterans in Greenville, Spartanburg, Oconee and Anderson counties. Theresa Thompson, CEO of Upstate Warrior Solution, said they are honored to be selected as a grant recipient for the foundation’s America250 initiative.
“As our nation prepares to commemorate 250 years of history, this support allows us to create meaningful opportunities for veterans, first responders and our community to reflect on the service, sacrifice, and shared values that continue to shape our country,” Thompson said. “We are grateful for Duke Energy Foundation’s investment in preserving stories, fostering connection and celebrating the spirit of America in the Upstate.”
Duke Energy Foundation also awarded $15,000 to Hidden Words. The nonprofit organization will use the funding to launch Operation Hidden Wounds Employment, a comprehensive support system for job readiness and employment for veterans in Sumter, Lee, Clarendon and Kershaw counties.
The first round of grants for Duke Energy Foundation’s America250 initiative was awarded in April to organizations focused on parks and green space revitalization, tree planting, trail maintenance and litter prevention. In total, the foundation distributed more than $550,000 as part of its America250 initiative.
