South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism announced May 1 that five Upstate projects received more than $2.3 million from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund.
The Upstate projects were part of 21 recreation projects across the state to receive $7.8 million in federal grants. The projects include:
- Belton’s Leda Poore Park — $500,000 will support the construction of a multi-use structure for concessions, storage, restrooms and a press box.
- Greenville’s Cleveland Park playground replacement — $500,000 will support the installation of two interconnected playgrounds, eight stand-alone elements, approximately six swings with bucket swing seats and inclusive equipment.
- Greenville County’s Southside Park playground — $500,000 will support the removal and demolition of existing playground structures, surfacing, sidewalks and fencing, and installation of new accessible playground equipment, safety surface, shade structures, new sidewalks and fencing.
- Spartanburg’s Duncan Park — $401,278 will support the construction of an accessible perimeter trail and accessible picnic shelter with storage, engineering and design, sitework for preparation of the trail, and picnic shelter.
- Spartanburg County’s North Spartanburg park improvements — $433,500 will support repaving and striping all parking lots, adding parking-lot islands and replacing the synthetic playing surface on the Carolina Miracle League field.

- S.C. State Parks’ Black River: Cold Creek acquisition — $321,000
- City of Lake City’s Blanding Street Park restroom facility and pathway lights — $312,570
- Marlboro County’s Lindsay Park improvements — $500,000
- Town of McBee’s McBee Recreational Complex Phase I development — $126,812
- Charleston County Parks & Recreation Commission’s Cooper River County Park Phase II development — $500,000
- Town of Edisto Beach’s Jungle Shores drive bike path resurface — $145,000
- Town of Moncks Corner’s Dr. William H. Lacey Park development — $500,000
- Town of Ridgeland’s Ridgeland Trails — $300,000
- City of Walterboro’s Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary Boardwalks — $500,000
The LWCF is a federal grant available to eligible local and state government entities to reimburse up to 50% of the project cost to acquire or develop outdoor recreation areas and facilities. Any property that uses LWCF money must be maintained in perpetuity as an active and viable outdoor recreation site.
